Safety guide

Online dating safety for Australians over 50

Most people date with honest intentions, but sensible precautions can protect your privacy, finances and wellbeing.

Protect personal information

Avoid sharing your home address, workplace, banking details, identity documents or passwords. Consider using a separate email address for dating accounts.

Never send money

Do not transfer money, buy gift cards, receive funds on someone else’s behalf or share banking access with a person you have only met online. Urgent medical, travel or business stories are common pressure tactics.

Watch for warning signs

  • Declarations of love very early in the conversation.
  • Repeated reasons for avoiding video calls or in-person meetings.
  • Requests to move quickly to private messaging.
  • Stories that change or details that do not add up.
  • Pressure to keep the relationship secret.

Plan safer first meetings

  • Meet in a public place during a busy time.
  • Tell a trusted person where you are going.
  • Use your own transport and keep your phone charged.
  • Limit alcohol and do not leave drinks unattended.
  • Leave if you feel uncomfortable.

Where to look for help
